Nicho or Retablo of Lady of Guadalupe
Hand-carved wooden frame has a base that's wider than the upright image support. The oval image inside the frame appears to be that of Mary, mother of Jesus, executed in colored straw and attached to a fabric backing of beige under a canop of blue, The frame iteself is a modified oval which is wider at bhe bottom than at the top. A shaped glass protects the image and is attached to the wooden frame with decorative brass upholstery tacks. The lower frame is carved and the uppper frame is painted with gold paint. The backing is a paper oval.
Society purchase in March 1953 from Mrs. Frances Quarles, Los Fonda Curio Shop in Taos, New Mexico.
