A black and white photograph print of the British Royal Navy escort ship H.M.S. Bentinck at its shipyard at Mare Island, California. An American stars and stripes shield-shape flag is draped over the front, and several British union jack flags are seen all over the ship. Several men in formal suits and hats are standing on the deck, and other onlookers are visible around the ship on other vessels and piers. The photograph was taken at the Bentick's christening held near Vallejo, California, where the ship was assembled. 56 percent of the ship, mostly its hull, was built in Denver by multiple different local manufacturers. The pieces were moved to Vallejo by highway and rail. The Bentinck was heralded by Colorado Governor Ralph Carr as the "first ship of Rocky Mountain fleet" in his speech at the ceremony. Ship building in Denver continued into the war for the American Navy, in part due to an influx of manned labor available in the city
