This basket is a wedding basket made by Utes for Navajo, for Utes and sometimes for the tourist trade. The basket is made from coiled willow with a two rod foundation. The design of the basket is the Spirit Trail, with opposing triangles in a series of eleven solid triangles in the bottom row and a series of twenty-two solid triangles in the top row separated by a solid band. The base is undyed. The triangles are black natural dye. The band is brown. The colors are beginning to fade. A small bit of cloth is pushed through the center base that was used for hanging. Some of the coils are exposed both inside and out.
Donated by Dr. Philip W. Whiteley in 1955. Dr. Whiteley was a collector of ethnographic materials from various Native American tribes. He donated his collection in 1955.
