This is a beaded awl case made of buckskin sewn with lazy stitch beadwork. The case is tubular in shape and has a buckskin thong and fringe. The beadwork has a white background with geometric designs in blue and green glass beads.
The Joseph O. Smith Collection (E.1323 - E.1393) was purchased from Mr. Utt with money collected by the SHS of Colorado by subscription. Mr. Joseph Smith was an employee of the Southern Ute Agency as early as 1895 and was an Indian agent from 1900-1905. Utt is the grand-nephew of Joseph O. Smith.
