Covered Wagon, Doll shoulder plate style ; China Shoulder Head Doll
China shoulder head has black hair and eyebrows, blue eyes with red line and corner dot, and cheeks and lips of a light coral color. Hairstyle is parted down the middle with sausage curles at sides and back. Shoulder plate is deep. White cotton cloth was used for torso, legs, and upper arms. Lower arms and fingers are hand-stitched kid leather stuffed with cotton batting. Body and arms are hand-stitched. Dress is black silk with narrow vertical white stripes. A self fabric gathered ruffle is machine stitched to the hem. The entire dress is lined with white silk. A shawl collar and front piece are made of an oblong piece of white cotton lace, possibly hand made. An ecru hand-quilted piece of silk was used for a petticoat along with a short white cotton slip and bloomers. Bloomers have a gathered ruffle of eyelet embroidery. Stockings are an open weave cotton knot; shoes are brown leather with a rosette and buckle at mid foot, and brown shoelaces. Soles are white leather. Shoes and stockings appear to be original to the doll.
This doll came to History Colorado in 1988 as part of the Bernice Lang doll collection. The doll was collected by either Bernice Lang, Wilmette (Minnie) Belle Jackson (Bernice's mother), or Lindy Lou Lang, Bernice's sister or mother-in-law as an addition to their doll collection. The doll is not thought to have been used by any of the three ladies as children. No further provenance is recorded in any records obtained by History Colorado.
