Milliner's Model ; Papier-mâché Shoulder Head Doll
Papier-mâché shoulder head doll has black hair parted down the middle with exposed ears and vertical curls encircling the back of the head. Papier-mâché is painted a light pink, eyebrows and eyes and dark, and cheeks and lips are pink. Shoulder plate is broad and deep. Kid leather body has narrow waist and full hips; seams are hand-stitched. All four limbs are hand-carved wood. Arms are painted a pinkish color; legs are more white. Flat-heeled shoes are painted red. Legs and arms are joined to body with blue tape. Shoulder plate shows evidence of blue tape, but does not cover the leather body. Body fill is sawdust.
This doll came to History Colorado in 1988 as part of the Bernice Lang doll collection. The doll was collected by either Bernice Lang, Wilmette (Minnie) Belle Jackson (Bernice's mother), or Lindy Lou Lang, Bernice's sister or mother-in-law as an addition to their doll collection. The doll is not thought to have been used by any of the three ladies as children. No further provenance is recorded in any records obtained by History Colorado.
