First postmaster comes to Sterling with her own building
General Note: Part of the CWA Pioneer Interviews Collection. Consists of a brief essay on Edna Propst Weir Westlake, the first postmaster in Sterling, Colorado. In this essay, Westlake recounts the establishment of the t post office in Sterling. A member of a family of early-day settlers in Logan County, Westlake become postmaster for the town of Julesburg, Colorado at 17 years of age. In 1881, a post office was established in Sterling, with Westlake serving as the postmaster for four months before M.C. King was appointed in her place. Westlake and her sister, Lena Propst Emery, also operated a dressmaking shop within the post office building for a time.
