Oil portrait of Governor John Franklin Shafroth given from the Estate of John F. Shafroth through sons Morrison, John F., Jr., and William Shafroth August, 1950. At same time also gave oil portrait of Mrs. John Shafroth. Other items given at the same time H.4347-H.4358 (crockery, statues, and furniture). In November 1950 donors gave a metal sign: " J.F. Shafroth, Lawyer & Notary Public" the first shingle of Governor Shafroth (H.4487).
, John Franklin Shafroth was born in Missouri in 1854. His father was a native of Switzerland. John F. Shafroth graduated from the University of Michigan in 1875, then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1876. He practiced in Missouri and in 1879 moved to Denver where he continued his practice of law. From 1887-91 he served as city attorney. A member of the Republican Party he was elected to Congress in 1895-97 but then left the party to join the Silver Republican Party being elected Congressman every two years between 1897 and 1904. He was elected Colorado's 18th governor in 1908, serving until 1913. He then served as Senator 1913-1919 but was unsuccessful in his re-election bid. While in the Senate he was the lead sponsor of the Jones-Shafroth Act, passed in 1917, which granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans.
In October 1881 he married Virginia Morrison in Fayette, Missouri. They had five children: Susan, John F., Jr., Morrison, George, and William. , Honest John Shafroth : a Colorado reformer / Stephen J. Leonard, Thomas J. Noel and Donald L. Walker, Jr.
