Pitons, Mountain Stock No. 74-P-133-25 ; ring piton
Short, dull iron wedge that tapers to a soft point, with a ring affixed to the opposite end intended for a snap link and climbing rope. This example is marked on the wedge. This piton appears to be Pitons, Mountain Type III according to QM Catalog Sec 1 (August 1943), p.30, though the style differs slightly. Online resources also suggest this type is the correct identifier.
Donated by Sherman L. Smith, who served with the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. He donated many of his own items, but also those of fellow 10th Mountain Division veterans from the Pacific Northwest.
