The sheath originally had a button hole and was buttoned inside her garments. Sophronia Lincoln was born in New York. She married Dr. Samuel W. Lincoln in New York and carried a knife within the sheath for the intent to kill herself if ever attacked by Indians on their journey to Colorado. After Samuel Lincoln died sometime prior to 1880, she remarried a gentleman by the name of Darius Pippin and moved with her three children from her marriage with Samuel Lincoln to Denver where she died in 1920. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
