Medical officer's emerald green silk sash
Azariah S. Elwood enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on the 15th of August, 1862 at the age of 34 years old. On the 13th of September, 1862 he enlisted in Company E, 40th Infantry Regiment of Iowa. On the 20th, he was promoted to Full Assistant Surgeon. On October 14, 1863 he received a disability discharge. Elwood moved to Colorado sometime between the 1880 and 1900 U.S. censuses. He is recorded as a resident of Golden, Colorado in 1900. According the an entry in the accession logbook, Elwood moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he practiced medicine and surgery up to the time of his death in 1926.
