These are personal effects and mementos belonging to T/SGT John W. Tripp of Company L, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. These include patches worn at different duty stations, a tape measure taken from a Japanese encampment on the island of Kiska, numerous German military effects taken from POWs and during occupation duties, and a postwar song book.
John W. Tripp was born on July 28, 1919 in Waterbury, CT. He enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1942, in Hartford. At first, he was assigned to the Army Air Forces, but was transferred to the 10th Mountain Division due to poor eyesight. With Company L, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, he participated in the invasion of Kiska and rejoined the division at Camp Hale before deploying to Italy. Here he was wounded in action on March 3, 1945, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He lived in Carbondale, CO later in life and passed away in 2022.
