Landscape painting depicting trees, sky, a river or lake, American Indians and a train. Painting was done by Forgy (donor noted it was painted in Colorado; this needs further research. No direct link to the artist has been made in Colorado. It is possible the landscape is of Ohio (where the artist was living in 1870) or possibly Indiana(the artist's father settled for a brief time in Indiana around 1838 but returned to Ohio where he died in 1844). The transcontinental railroad was connected to Ohio and Indiana as well as Colorado. The title was a popular theme during the artists lifetime.
John D. Forgy was one of 5 children born to John D. and Catherine Forgy. He was born in Ohio, studied art in Cincinnati, served in the civil War and lived for many years in Iowa.
