Collection contains a certificate granting a commission to Woldemar Fischer in the militia of the State of Missouri, as well as a loyalty oath written by Fischer as part of his induction as a Lieutenant Colonel into the Battalion of St. Louis County, dated August 31, 1848. A native of Germany, Fischer received his military education as an artillery officer in the Prussian army. After immigrating to the United States, he became commander of Company B (part of Major Clark's Battery of Artillery) of General Stephen Kearny's Army of the West during the Mexican-American War. He is reputed to have been the first European to climb the mountain that later became known as Fisher's Peak (with a different spelling), near Trinidad, Colorado.
