Donated by Charles S. Stobie, February 22, 1933. Charles Stobie came to Colorado in the summer of 1865 at the age of 20. As a young man, he lived with Nevava’s band of Uncompahgre (Northern) Utes. Later he became a scout for Major Jacob Downing and Major D.C. Oakes. Accompanying Oakes, Stobie helped establish the White River Indian Agency in northwestern Colorado. He also maintained an artist’s studio in Denver for many years, later moving to Chicago. Colorado Magazine, November 1933, reports that in 1928, Colorado Historical Society officers contacted Mr. Stobie, asking him to promise his collection to the Society. Stobie died before providing for that in his will. The Society then appealed to his heirs in Scotland. They agreed to release the collection to the State. Society members traveled to Chicago in 1933 to retrieve it.
