This is a ceremonial pipe that consists of two separate components; a wooden pipe stem carved from a single piece of wood, and a red L-shaped catlinite bowl. The stem is predominately flat and rectangular shaped. A wooden tube inserted into the end serves as a connector to the bowl.
On March 16, 2015 during a NAGPRA collections review, designated tribal representatives from the three Ute tribes informed History Colorado staff that because this pipe is made from catlinite, it was most likely used for ceremonial purposes, but it may have also been used for leisurely smoking.
