This piece is a metal cylinder with accompanying iron balls of shot which once filled the cylinder, and detached lid. Historically, canister shot is packed with sawdust to add more solidity and cohesion to the mass and to prevent the balls from crowding each other when the round was fired. This pieces, referred to in the War Relics Catalog as a three inch canister, which refers to the diameter of the container.
