PROSPECTUS
It is quite impossible to overestimate the importance of such a publication as we now launch for public favor. Year after year, for twenty-five years, we have ventured, at high cost, the publication of Art Works of Beauty and Instructive Value - each venture greater than its predecessor, and thanks to their unwavering appreciation, the kind response of our patrons has kept pace with out enterprise. We are therefore encouraged on this occasion to excel ourselves and publish a Work of Surpassing Magnificence, containing the cream of recent Masterpieces of Painting, selected from the Modern Art of the Whole World. In these days of rapid progress, the only ventures, whether of Science, Literature, or Art, which emphatically command the attention of the people, are those that surpass all their predecessors; and on this standard we hopefull submit to the American public our New Art publication--
The Triumphs of Modern Art
THE ROYAL ACADEMY EXHIBITION OF LONDON, for the last two years, has had the good fortune to have its walls adorned with a higher and better class of paintings than ever before in the history of the institution. THE SALON OF PARIS for the same period has been nearly equally fortunate; therefore, as we cull the cream of these Great Galleries for our work, we may claim the highest excellence and the lartest novelties. In addition to these we have secured the best pictures from the following collections for the Triumphs of Modern Art: THE GERMAN EXHIBITION AT EARL'S COURT, LONDON; THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION AT BERLIN; THE ACADEMY EXHIBITORS OF AMERICA'S BEST ART SCHOOLS; THE ANNUAL PRIZES OF THE EXHIBITIONS OF BRUSSESL, ROME, FLORENCE, MUNICH, MADRID, VIENNA, etc., etc. It will be seen we have endeavored to make the work comprehensive in its range and worthy of its title.
All this has been made possible to us by controlling exclusively in America the unequalled photogravure process of reproducing on steel the exact fac-similes of the pictures.
But not alone by Photogravure have we reproduced these TRIUMPHS OF ART for the American public. A few of the best paintings could not be photographed, and these we have had etchings made by TEN of the BEST ARTISTS-ETCHERS OF AMERICA, viz.: DEARTH, DEILMAN, FERRIS, HAMILTON, HARPER, KING, MORAN, ROST, SARTAIN AND TURNER.
THE SCOPE OF THE WORK.--It will represent Three Hundred Paintings from the above Exhibitons, viz,: 10 Etchings, by the above-named etchers, and 90 Photogravures, the engraved surface of each plate averaging 12 X 8 inches, printed on paper 17 X 11 3/4; and 200 Typogravures for the embellishment of the text and rendering complete and thorough this grand publication.
The descriptive text, terse and brief, is by Henri Sylvestre, one of the foremost Art critics of the time. M. Sylvestre has made a novel departure in the arrangement of this collection--by selecting in threes, one large photogravure, or etching and "facing" it with two small pictures similar in sentiment, with the description of all three pictures in one centre--thus making on one view a harmony of Triple-Triumphs.
