Collection consists of a scrapbook containing correspondence, clippings, reports, programs, and other material relating to Mary Florence Lathrop. Born in Philadelphia in 1865, Lathrop was forced to move to Denver in 1890 because of ill health. Becoming interested in the law, she graduated with honors from the University of Denver Law School in 1896. In 1897 she established a law office in Denver, and won an early case by default because the opposing attorney refused to try the case because she was a woman. Lathrop developed a reputation as a tenacious opponent in the court room, and was the first woman to try a case before the Colorado State Supreme Court. In 1918, Lathrop and Mary Grossman became the first women members of the American Bar Association. Lathrop continued to practice law until her death in 1951. Much of the material in this collection pertains to the American Bar Association.
