This revolver was transferred to History Colorado by Judge Charles D. Hayt, whose name is inscribed on the gun. Charles Denison Hayt was Justice of Colorado state supreme court from 1889-98 and Chief Justice from1892-1898. Captain (eventually Major) George Shorkley, 15th Infantry, was the post commander at Fort Garland from 1876 - 1888. There is no information recorded in the accession files or catalog cards that would indicate how or when either George Shorkley, or Judge Hayt obtained the gun, or when it was transferred from Shorkley to the Judge. Information recorded in the records indicate the pistol had been used by Shorkley "in Indian raids." However, there is no information to clarify how, or even whether, the gun was used by Judge Hayt or if it was something he collected or was a gift to him. There is also no record of when Judge Hayt transferred it to the museum.
