This toy charm is in the shape of a turtle. Beadwork on buckskin on the obverse side is executed with the spot stitch using predominantly pony beads and a small number of seed beads and a curvilinear pattern. Beads are red, clear, light blue, light and dark pink, tan, black and brown. The reverse side is plain with a brass safety pin fastener. According to the Accession file, this charm is typical of the work done for the tourist trade.
On March 16, 2015 during a NAGPRA collections review, designated tribal representatives from the three Ute tribes informed History Colorado staff that this charm may have been attached to clothing or other objects, including cradleboards. Tribal representatives indicated this charm may have also been a child's toy.
