This knife was donated to the museum in 1937 by Roy Schaer. The knife was identified as having belonged to Christopher 'Kit' Carson prior to being gifted to a Mr. Samuel Briggs in Dodge City, Kansas. The circumstances and date of that transfer are not specified in the museum records. According to information found on the websites churchofjesuschrist.org and ancestry.com, Samuel Briggs was born on June 20, 1826 in South Clifton, Nottinghamshire, England. He was a Mormon pioneer who traveled to the Western United States via wagon with the Uriah Curtis Company in 1852. Having converted to Mormonism after arriving in the United States, Briggs was arrested along with three other men in Lehi, Utah for "unlawful cohabitation" (polygamy). When, where, and how Roy Schaer obtained the knife and the provenance, and what his relation to Samuel Briggs was, is also not recorded.
