The Battle of Chickamauga occurred September 18-20th 1863. The battle was fought between Union General William S. Rosecrans and Confederate Major General Braxton Bragg. The battle followed the Union success of Tullahoma Campaign. Rosecrans army forced Bragg out of Chattanooga. Bragg was determined to reoccupy Chattanooga and followed the Union army, with reinforcements from General Hood, Bragg marched his army into the west bank of the Chickamauga Creek. His plan was known to the Union and they prepared. The battle started after dawn on the 19th. The Confederate army was not able to break through the Union line. By nightfall General Longstreet of the Confederate army joined into the battle, drastically increasing the Confederate's numbers. On the Union's side was General Thomas Wood, nicknamed "The Rock of Chickamauga," because he took command and reorganized the Union. The Confederates were able to block Federal supplies to Chattanooga, leading to their victory at Chickamauga. The Union still occupied Chattanooga and therefore General Bragg's goal was not successful.
The Battle of Chickamauga was the second bloodiest battle during the Civil War, only after Gettysburg and was the highest casualty battle in the Western Theater. The Union lost 16,000 and the Confederate's 18,000.
