This sixth-plate ambrotype under a brass mat and preserver in half of a wood and leather case, depicting two men identified in History Colorado's accession records as J. Brown (left) and Private Aaron Brown (right) of Company H of the 1st Regiment of the Colorado Cavalry. The man identified as J. Brown is likely Private Jordan J. Brown. The 1st Regiment as organized on November 1, 1862 and mustered out at Leavenworth, Kansas on November 18, 1865. Company H was one of the companies from the 1st Regiment that participated in the Sand Creek Massacre against the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians on November 29, 1864. The ambrotype was made by an unidentified photographer during the Civil War, circa 1862-1865. Both of the men wear kepi hats, although neither man is in military uniform.
