6-5-13 AZ--This is part of a larger collection that includes (H.4647-H.4661, H.6837, H.4736-H.4745). The collection is all related to James B. Slack (1860-1936). Slack's parents were from Ireland; Bryan Slack and Quinn Slack. Slack was born 18 Sep 1860 in Madina, New York per his enlistment record in MSS 574. March 20, 1882 he enlisted in the Colorado National Guard, he was a sergeant. In 1887, the Denver City Directory lists Slack as living in the Markham Hotel. On Feb. 27, 1888 he left the Colorado National Guard (Chaffee Guard)--per his enlistment record he served a total of 5 1/2 years. On 15 Nov 1887 he married Gertrude V. Ellett in Denver, Denver County (Denver), Colorado, USA at the Markham Hotel (his relative Bernard was the proprietor of the Markham). In 1889 Slack was operating Welsh & Slack with Bernard M. Slack. In 1896 he is listed in the Denver City Directory s operating the Slack-Smith Liquor Company. 1897 he was working as the treasurer for a liquor company. In 1910 James is the proprietor of a hotel in Denver; his son Michael James and his sister Bessie (manager of the Tremont in 1926). By Death: James B. Slack died 30 Dec 1936.
-Donor Rosamond Slack was Michael James Slack’s wife. Michael James Slack was the son of James B. Slack. Michael James was a curator at the Society; after his death Rosamond took over as curator.
