This is a wooden morache or bear growler. This morache is made from the trunk of a small tree. It is smoothed and notched on one side. One end is round and the other narrows to a dull point. There are 19 slots cut at one end, each approximately a half inch wide.
The Joseph O. Smith Collection (E.1323 - E.1393) was purchased from Mr. Utt with money collected by the SHS of Colorado by subscription. Mr. Joseph Smith was an employee of the Southern Ute Agency as early as 1895 and was an Indian agent from 1900-1905. Utt is the grand-nephew of Joseph O. Smith.
