This hat belonged to Jim Baker, known as "Honest Jim Baker", was a frontiersman, trapper, hunter, army scout, interpreter, and rancher. Based on the 1878 patent register marking in the sweatband, the hat was likely worn after Baker had given up fur trapping, which had come to an end around 1855. Baker was born in Belleville, Illinois in 1818, and died in Savery, Wyoming in 1898. The hat was secured in 1931 by Dr. Nolie Mumey and donated to the museum in 1899, on behalf of Baker's daughters, Madeline Baker Adams and Jennie Baker Reische. Mumey also donated several other personal effects of Baker's he'd obtained from Adams and Reische.
