Dr. Temple Grandin is a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, designer and consultant of livestock handling facilities, an advocate for people with autism, and was named 2010 as one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people. Grandin was one of the first public figures to publicly disclose her autism diagnosis, and has been an advocate for those on the autism spectrum.
While in high school, Grandin invented a soothing machine for herself called a "hug box" or "squeeze machine." After witnessing cattle being loaded for slaughter and the distress they experienced, Grandin invented a machine for calming cattle similar to her squeeze machine. Facilities she has designed are located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. In North America, almost half of the cattle are handled in a center track restrainer system that she designed for meat plants. Curved chute and race systems she has designed for cattle are used worldwide and her writings on the flight zone and other principles of grazing animal behavior have helped many people to reduce stress on their animals during handling.
