7/8/2020, I. Tovar: Originally donated by Kenneth Englert, September 11, 1979 as being from Turkey Creek, with possible connection to the Bent Brother's first stockade. Subsequent surveys and excavations of the site in 1984 by Centennial Archaeology and 1997 by the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation determined the location to not be associated with the stockade. Evidence indicates this collection to be associated with “Andrews Homestead”. Research indicates that “Andrews” is DeForest H. Andrews who received a patent for the land in 1884 and may be the same individual appearing in Gilpin and Pitkin Counties as a miner. The Homestead dates to around 1860s to 1880s. Though enlisted as part of the 3rd Colorado Cavalry Regiment associated with the Sand Creek Massacre of November 29, 1864, DeForest H. Andrews does not appear to have been present at the Massacre according to the Sand Creek Massacre Background Booklet by Jeff C. Campbell.
