From DPL: "Nathan E. Morrell was born January 14, 1924 in Manchester, New Hampshire, the son of Nathan B. and Wiona Foote Morrell. During high school, Nate was a member of Hannes Schneider’s original ski class at Cranmore Mountain, North Conway, New Hampshire. Following graduation, Nate enlisted in the United States Army on January 13, 1943. As a ski instructor, he volunteered for the ski troops and was transferred to Camp Hale, Colorado. Initially assigned to the 86th Infantry Regiment, he later served with the Mountain Training Group and the 10th Mountain Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop. Both of these units were responsible for early training for the Division. Morrell later served at Camp Swift and during the Division’s Italian Campaign. During combat, Morrell became a medic. He was wounded in action and received a Bronze Star Medal for his actions April 14, 1945 near Castel d’Aiano. He received a battlefield commission as a 2nd lieutenant. Morrell later served as a medic in the Korean War.
Following his discharge, Nate worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker in New Hampshire. He moved to New York in 1967, where he owned a variety of businesses. He was President of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division and was heavily involved in the 10th Mountain Military Monument at Fort Drum, New York. Most recently, Morrell worked with the Project Fallen Warrior Monument, which should be unveiled in 2014. Morrell passed away March 6, 2013 at the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, New York, where he had been a patient for a short time."
