This albumen print on card mount was taken by an unidentified photographer in 1860. The photograph shows the original building for Clark, Gruber & Co. (later Clark and Company), a private mint in Denver, Colorado. In April of 1863, the United States government bought Clark, Gruber & Co. and used the building as an assay office until 1904 when they decided to begin minting coins at a new, more lavish building in Denver. The large signs on the building read "Bank & Mint" and "Clark, Gruber & Co." The smaller signs on the posts and windows read "City Treasurer's Office," "Office of the Territorial Treasurer," "Coin up for Gold Dust," and "Exchange, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Leavenworth, St. Joe."
This collodion printing-out paper print on a card mount was taken by an unidentified photographer circa 1898-1903. This photograph shows the first United States Mint in Denver, Colorado. In 1863, the United States government purchased the Clark, Gruber & Co. mint at 16th Street and Market Street. They built the United States Denver Mint on the same location, although it was used as an assay office and not a mint. In 1895, construction on the new mint began. The building next to the mint advertises "Aspen House, Single Rooms, 20¢," "1545-The Standard Confectionery Co-1547," and "Proudfit and Ormsby, wholesale poultry, game, eggs, butter & cheese, rose creamery depot."

This 5.61 ounce gold ingot is stamped "U.S. Branch Mint, Denver, 1865" on the obverse side. The number 13 on the face and side of the ingot is the inventory number and indicates this was the 13th ingot made in 1865. The bar is counter-stamped with the seal of the US Mint which bears an eagle, shield, stars and a balance scale. At various times the first Denver Mint was called the U.S. Mint at Denver and the U.S. Branch Mint at Denver. This ingot has the former name which was in use earlier when the mint was heavily involved in assaying. Clark & Gruber made their own ingots from 1860-1863 though none are known to now exist. When Clark & Gruber sold the bank and mint to the federal government in 1864, the government continued assaying ore for the miners and casting gold into ingots which were shipped to Philadelphia for striking coins (no coins are known to have been struck at the first Denver Mint). As the mines played out there was less and less to do at the mint and the building was a
