One metal scabbard. Top base in concentric rings, chape slightly accentuated. Two metal rings set into metal bands, one with scrap of wire wrapped around tiny hoop. Tiny scrap of textile (?). Otherwise undecorated.
This scabbard and its sword were captured during Union Brigadier General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick's raid on Richmond, Virginia between February 28 and March 3, 1864. The official goal of the mission was to rescue Union prisoners of war, but this objective may have been a cover for a plan to assassinate Jefferson Davis and raze Richmond. Kilpatrick had a reputation for foolhardy attacks, and his raid on Richmond was unsuccessful.
