A German sword and scabbard used by the German Army during World War I. The sword has a steel blade and a dark brownish red wooden handle. The handle has diagonal lines cut into each side. Near the base of the handle is a round button which pushes out a rectangular section of metal on the other side. Below the rectangle that gets pushed out are two identical symbols, probably maker marks. On the blade, on the opposite side, near the handle is the inscription: C.G. Haenel / Suel (sp?). On the top of the blade, by the handle is the same symbol as the two on the handle and then the number "06".
