Founded in 1902-1903 by Dr. Elwin J. Courtney when psychiatric was in its infancy. Mount Airy provided private psychiatric care as an alternative to the state hospital. The facility was sold to Dr. George Neuhaus, professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1911. In 1930, known as a sanitarium, Mount Airy was sold to Dr. Sidney Bluemel. A new annex was built to the existing facility in 1957. It was formally organized in 1959 with a medical staff and constitutional by-laws. Another building addition was completed in 1975. Deregulation led to a glut of Denver hospital beds in the 1980s and 1990s. Mount Airy partnered with Rose Medical Center in 1982. The facility was located in Littleton, Colorado; but was unable to compete and closed on July 26, 1991
