This hand-colored, sixth-plate daguerreotype of Harriet Cornelia Sweetland Tompkins (1825-1874) was taken by an unidentified photographer circa 1849-1853. The daguerreotype is housed in a wood and leather case. Harriet Cornelia was the daughter of Joshua Tompkins (1793-1882) and Elizabeth Lawrence (1794-1854). In 1847 she married Walter Hale Sweetland (1818-1888) and the two had three children, Henry Hale Sweetland (1848-1938) Lucy Wright Sweetland Jerome (1854-1903) and Mary Tompkins Sweetland (1857-1858). Henry Hale moved to Colorado in 1882 and became an early resident of Brush, Colorado. Lucy Wright Sweetland Jerome married John Lathrop Jerome (1854-1903). John Lathrop was a prominent lawyer and early pioneer in the city of Denver. This daguerreotype is part of the John Lathrop Jerome collection.
