The photograph shows firefighters from Engine Company 3 of the Denver Fire Department in Denver, Colorado in uniform at their fire station, in front of the fire engine. The men, all of whom are African American, have been identified left to right as Lieutenant Claude H. DePriest (1894-1967), Ed Shorty, John Black Jr., William L. Branson (1908-1976), Clarence N. Caldwell (1913-1997), Anthony Thomas, Erwin Dabney (1914-1997), Al Silvers, and Captain Nathan Briffle.
