"Arthur F. Muschler was an officer in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, serving primarily with Battery B of the 604th Field Artillery Battalion. He also served with 604-HQ, 10-ART-HQ, and 605-A. He trained with the division at Camp Hale and Camp Swift, deployed to Italy, and was discharged at Camp Carson. In Italy, he was wounded in action on 20 February 1945 at Mount Belvedere. He was twice awarded Bronze Stars for combat heroism, at Mount Belvedere on 20 February and at Torre Iuissi on 14 April. He left service as a First Lieutenant. His obituary below notes his other activities related to the division.
From obituary: Arthur F. Muschler, resident of Oak Brook since 1960, died on April 16, 2002 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 120 East First Street, Hinsdale, IL 60521, on Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m., (630-323-4900). Born in Aurora, IL on July 22, 1922, Mr. Muschler attended Michigan State University, Yale University, the Swiss Federal Technical Institute and the University of Michigan earning degrees in Forestry. He worked and taught at Yale as an Assistant Professor in the School of Forestry from 1950 to 1953, before joining the Edward Hines Lumber Co. in Chicago as Technical Director, retiring in 1986. He served in many professional organizations, including terms as President of the Society for Wood Science and Technology (1961-1962) and The Forest Products Research Society (1966-1967). Mr. Muschler served the community on the Oak Brook Zoning Board of Appeals during the formative period between 1972-1982, and on the Board of Directors of the Gads Hill Center Settlement House in Chicago from 1962 to 1994. During World War II, Mr. Muschler served in combat as a Forward Observer in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division. He was decorated twice for heroic achievement and was awarded a Bronze Star with Oak Leak Cluster, the Purple Heart, and three Battle Stars. As a civilian, he served the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division as President (1989-1991) and as Chairman of the Board (1991-1994). He also served as Secretary General of the International Foundation of Mountain Soldiers (1992-1993), an organization dedicated to peace and reconciliation. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; their sons, George, James and John; six grandchildren, Carolyn, Ian, James, Alex, Ana and Evan; and his brother, Robert.
