Studio portrait of an African American woman named Mattie Lemon in a high collared Victorian dress with a hat. This photo came out of the Sam Howe Scrapbooks (Howe was Denver's first detective.) Mattie Lemon was accused of participating in the murder of John H. Fitzgerald, a barber from Leadville. Fitzgerald was murdered in a brothel owned by Belle Warden on Holliday Street in 1884. Mattie was sentenced to 5 years in the State Penitentiary in Canon City, but died in 1887 of an undisclosed illness. (Rocky Mountain News, June 21, 1887 p. 2)
