After a state-wide strike was called by the Industrial Workers of the World union in late 1927, a gun battle between miners and police took place near the Columbine Mine, in which six union members were killed and dozens of others were wounded. Following the tragedy, mine owners in the area relented and signed a contract with the United Mine Workers of America. Includes title: "The Columbine mine tragedy, November 1, 1927, commemoration project."
